More art from the James Museum of Western Art
St Petersburg, FL
I shared about the Beacon Blanket Factory here in Swannanoa NC last year, and the same incident of the suit by the FCC and the Navahos against the North Carolina company. SEE MY POST HERE.
The history museum in Black Mountain had the display for a whole year about Beacon Blankets, including this site.
The designs were definitely copied from Native American designs. But Beacon had other qualities which were not provided by Navaho blankets. Beacon had a special soft finishing process, while Navaho blankets were beautiful but more rough in texture.
Hello, interesting post on the Beacon blankets. It is a shame the design was copied. Enjoy your day, wishing you a happy new week ahead.
ReplyDeleteI was amazed to run into this painting in a museum in St. Petersburg FL, after having worked in the little museum here where the factory (now gone) was being memorialized.
Delete...I love to see blankets on the Antique Roadshow!
ReplyDeleteThe blankets are really beautiful, as well as the slow process of weaving them.
