Getting ready for a show

Chip 'n Dip bowl - $45

Surf and sand mugs $25 or set of 4 for 80
For those who have canopy tents, tables or shelves, and tubs of packed of priced pottery, I salute you.
I've made pottery for most of the summer (with a few months off when I was sick).  I wish I had taken a vacation, but it's hard to do when you're retired, everyone thinks your life is just one long vacation.  Ha.
Honey pot/jar $35

And so today I meet with my friend Cathy Babul, who will be sharing a booth with me, and the job of getting everything set up next Saturday for the Art by the Tracks show here in Black Mountain.

Large red sunflower bowl (10" diameter, 5" high) - $55
There are joys in this event, as well as some grueling hard work.  Physical work.  Like having a 40 pound weight on each of the corners of the tent.  We have cement blocks.  Hauling them from Cathy's pickup to the tent is one of our favorite pleasures.  Just think how we're saving money on membership in the gym.
Medium yellow sunflowers bowl - $30

The other hard physical labor is loading tubs of pots, tables, and paraphenelia for the show....bags for sales, shelving units, table clothes, clipboard to keep track of sales, petty cash for change, a "Square for phone" to take charge cards....etc.

Red sunflowers vase - $30  Red sunflowers jar - $40

This is the red sunflower series...and I think I've shown just about all of them.

Cookie Jars - One

I started with this little one.  5 pounds of clay and a lot of trimming.

Having done over a dozen small cats in yoga poses, which apparently aren't considered sculptures in clay by the ones who look at pottery blogs (not a one was mentioned last month by Pottery Blogs)...I decided I could do a few cookie jars.  I guess the yoga cats are consider whimsey.  They each took at least and hour to make.  And I'm an artist, so I consider them whimsey art!
Well, I decorated it with the red sunflowers.

Five red sunflowers on a bowl

First let me give you my mini-rant.

I believe artists should do their own work.  When beginning, we often copy, or use stencils, or even just "cut and paste" designs we find that please us.

Artists (and craftspeople too) have the job of giving the world beautiful designs.

At some point we artists should be doing totally unique designs...no more using other people's work.

If we were writers, it would be called plagiarizing.  So the next time I frown when another potter has copied a design, used a "commercially produced decal" or duplicated what another artist actually designed, you'll know why.

Now I'll share my recent glazing on large bowls.  I went through my process earlier this year, and it's still pretty much the same.  Check out the February post if you wish.

I still am using Mayco's designer liners to draw free-hand flowers and leaves on the side of my bowl. If I could make smooth enough surfaces, there wouldn't be the bumps in quality of line work.  But this is what I can do at this point in my life.

Then with several brushes, I use Mayco's Stroke & Coat colors to color the flowers...many layers of different colors.

Final step is to brush on some matt clear glaze over the flowers and leaves.  Then I brush two coats of butter yellow in all the in-between places...with some overlapping of the leaves.  That way (I hope) the leaves will pick up some of the yellow and blend in as well, rather than looking like they were cut and pasted onto the pot.

.
This is the first true fall foliage I will admit to seeing...though several weeks ago a friend showed me a red leaf or two on a tree.  But I couldn't resist this pretty maple on the sidewalk.

PS.  Here's the finished product...just out of the glaze kiln, with five red sunflowers on it!

Deep red sunflowers

I was able to grow them in the raised bed garden this year.

So I took a step stool over this morning to climb high enough to cut some of these pretties to take to church.

The beautiful fibonacci design in the seed head is unbelievable.

Not to mention petals which are like velvet they are such dark reds.
