The new Red House and Gallery

The Red House lost it's home last winter, as a new landlord didn't renew the lease. BUT things got much better for them.

The Swannanoa Valley Fine Arts League (SVFAL) is the oldest art association in the area. It was nicknamed the Red House because they were located in a renovated old house painted red on the exterior.  Here's my post about the former "Red House."

But now they have an excellent location in the center of Black Mountain, on Cherry Street.

I'm posting both photos because the first shows the corner where Cherry St. and State St. meet, and this second of the new façade shows a little (well big) arrow pointing to another entrance on the far right.

This leads upstairs to artists' studios where they also sell their work. And classroom space as well.

For now I am not thrilled with their signage...just a sandwich-board on the sidewalk.

It is a well appointed gallery space, though a bit crowded compared to some others. The SWFAL has a theme for their exhibits, which is posted at the entrance.

I am on their mailing list still, from when I was a member and volunteered to sit in the gallery in the Red House. So I'll include these two current postings they are offering:

Let Loose Tuesdays

Every Tuesday from 1:30 PM - 4:30 PM at the The Red House Gallery & Studios

Bring your favorite - or wannabe favorite - or not so favorite - or not new to you - medium & project, and create while you share space with other creative types. All mediums and projects welcome! Open to members and non-members!

Fee: $5 per session, to cover classroom rent.

See you there!! Coordinators: Ruth Duckworth (ruthjduckworth@gmail.com)

& Tina Kannapel (tinasstudio@yahoo.com)

Open Studio

The Red House open studio is an ongoing event, offering members and other interested artists opportunities each week to draw and paint the live model.

The model fee is $15.00

For more information, contact Fran Greenberg at greenbergfrances@yahoo.com

I noticed these two programs are ongoing and open to artists who aren't members of SVFAL.

Clouds meet a mountain

Looking south and east, there's usually a ridge of mountains from our view in Black Mountain, where Rte. 9 wends its way to Chimney Rock and Lake Lure eventually...or maybe Fairview and Arden.

The other evening I watched as clouds caught on the mountain tops, then slipped down the slopes.

A bit of nature reminding us of her beauty, if we stop to look in our busy lives.

Daring to dream what is deepest in our collective longings is what makes us most human and fully alive.

Memories shared

Some of my favorite things from Long, Long Ago.
Newborn babies! (This is close to the Sepia Saturday meme this week)
Retiring to North Carolina (2007) where friend Rosie (on left) and her husband lived. Then they moved to Washington state!

Going back to college to finish my degree in art (and then grad school also!)

One of the men I almost married...

The thrill of takeoff, Pan American from Miami, FL (I'm second from r. front row)

Marcellus Williams (Sun Bear) visited Tallahassee and shared on Indian Mounds near Lake Jackson

Muffin, the furry one

Cat toes, those little pink ones in the white fur.
And not so long ago, but every single day now...

I'm submitting this post to Sepia Saturday...because I can't figure out anything to say about their photo this week.  I've very little interest in baby beauty contests!   (Except my own beautiful babies, and my grandbabies! Of course!) But check over there to see what others have come up with.

MudBuddies last week

Beautiful setting, plenty of parking, great market
Lesson of the day, wind will tear flowers to shreds!
Marsha setting up her pots

Cathy considering her set up

Bette is our raku and jewelry artist

Barb's mugs and tumblers (and one of Marsha's casseroles too)

Pat's diverse creations
Our little co-op of five potters who started out at Black Mountain's Clay Studio at the Center for the Arts...we've got just about everything made in clay available here at the Tailgate Markets...each Sat. 9-12 all summer long.

Mud buddies

First market of the 2014 summer season...Black Mountain Tailgate Market that is...
Pat (in pink) and Marsha, (in dark blue) discuss something that we'll never know.

After a winter of making pottery in different places, it was so fun to see each of our 5 creations.  Here Bette (in red) and Cathy (in tan) discuss glazes.

The 8:30 set up shows gorgeous green grass.

I dropped my mugs and cups (on the right end of the table shown above) and ran back to the Trillium Church Festival and sale up the road.  I am sorry to have missed seeing all my friends last Sat. at the Tailgate market...so I'll be there with bells on this Sat (9-12). (Don't ask me where my bells are, however.)

Tailgate fun

Bette and Barb try out the new phone's camera...which makes noses very big, we found!

My Mud Buddies display with the entertainers right next to us.  Sometimes we have to shout because the music can get a bit loud.  And it's folk music, not rock!

Studio sculptures

Here's where I'm working most days.  This is part of the Mud Colony studio sharing

I was working on a new sculpture this week.

But she wasn't finished yesterday when I took these pics.  I added a dress, and some design work on the bottom later.

But this was the stage when I had clean enough hands to handle the camera.

And here are some of the other folks who also work at the Black Mountain clay studio.

Sarah is assembling something that will be perhaps a teapot or a table or a shrine...I'll wait till she's finished.

Blair's bears are cavorting around one of her huge pots.

Here's Matilda doing some glazing (I know she spells her name somehow differently, sorry).

Thanks for reading and for all your comments!

Coming to the cottage studio sale

I have invited you to see my pottery at my house Sun. Sept. 30, 12-5 pm

Taking the first left after the Unitarian Universalist Church on Montreat Rd. you are on Beech St.

The second house on the right is where my cottage studio is...102 Beech St.

Park in front or maybe in the UU parking lot across Montreat (the little Toyota will be parked in the drive of the empty house on the corner, so don't look for it!

As you walk towards the cottage, stay on the right...

I'll have the door open (and the cats closed away somewhere so they can't get outside!)

Hope you can come by on Sunday between 12 and 5.  If not, contact me and we'll try to meet another time!
