Celebrating the dark...

Happy Solstice to all my Pagan Friends.
This is a repost from several years ago...

First I must say that I celebrate not only the light returning as our great mother earth turns again toward Sol...but I celebrate this night, the longest, the womb of the dark.

Here's a sweet picture of Mama Earth.

We have such light seeking impulses.  Probably as it helps with life sustaining.  But there is also the wonder of dark.  The resting.  The dreaming through nights that are so much longer than daytime.  Do you have dreams?

I've been having sexual dreams lately.  At 73 I guess I've got the thoughts still, those juicy exciting urges that bring a burst of physical joy after effort.  I won't go any further into details, but let you realize that the same urges that began with the hormonal impulses of a teen ager do continue throughout our lives.

Dreams belong to the dark nights.  Darkness is not bad...however it is coupled with many of our fears.  I chose to look at the darkness as a shroud of safety which offers supreme restfulness.  Don't misunderstand me that I'm out roaming any dark streets at midnight, nor the woods.

I have observed darkness most when in nature.  But I haven't explored it lately.  There was a time when I found I could walk at night in a woods with just starlight, or cloud light providing the difference between the solid trunks of trees and the clearer greyer places where I could pass.  It's easier with some light from a moon, but not necessary.

If you've never walked between tree trunks in the dark, never experienced all the permutations of blackness to grey, you have yet to stretch your night vision.  Seriously.  You see not so much by looking ahead, but by scanning side to side, as that way you gather more information from the sides of your eyes.

So this city gal did go camping for many summers, and now remembers those trips from tent to bathroom in the middle of the night.

But back to Solstice and celebrating the dark.

one is really sure how long ago humans recognized the winter solstice ...
A ritual is called for, at least if you want to really get into celebration mode.

No not to sing songs, or eat a feast, or wake up early and see if any presents are under a fake tree in the living room.  Think of what we're going to celebrate.  The Dark.

A long night of it.  Lots of comfort for sleep.  Maybe a cup of hot cocoa before sleep.  Maybe a nibble on something that's soothing, cookies perhaps.  Dreams come when we're moving into a REM-state or waking, then returning back to deep sleep.  So preparing for a comfortable sleep is important...wearing your jammies, having the best sheets and blankets and pillows...having the heater set just right so you are totally comfortable.

That's what the Dark needs of you.  Comfort.  A small candle light before turning off all light is soothing.  Be sure to close all blinds and drapes to the intrusion of outside street lights.  Do some slow deep breathing, perhaps meditate, perhaps say your prayers.  Welcome the darkness with all her qualities.

What does the dark mean to you?  For me (as you see) there's the sense of a womb, being closely supported by invisible forces, a place of growth and nurturing, stillness, receiving rather than giving, resting, listening to your sub-conscious through dreams, being alone rather than in community, connecting to your own sense of the Source of all life, and above all, rest.

If you want to record your dreams, prepare to do that as easily as possible, with your journal and a pen near your bed.  Plan for a short awake time right after a dream, to write a few notes, then back to snuggle into the dream-state again.  In the morning those notes can remind you of the full extent of a dream.  And another great fun thing is to actually go back into a dream.  You can just go back to sleep with thoughts of the dream, and maybe intentions to do something "next".  Dreaming is such fun.  If you don't have time the next morning, you can do a bit of "lucid" dreaming when you go to sleep that night.

A dream journal is a place to find out what you are telling yourself.  I kept one for about a year, and shared on a weekly basis one of my dreams with a Dream Group.  Yes, about a dozen people would share their dreams, and discuss what the dreams might mean to themselves.  Nobody gave a stock "meaning" to another person's dream, but would share how it would have meaning for themselves.  Thus, no snakes were considered obviously phallic.  As Jeremy Taylor said, "It is my assumption that all dreams come in the service of health and wholeness and that only the dreamer knows for certain what his/her dream means."

Oh, did I mention that Rev. Taylor wrote the book that started our Dream Group?  Here is a link to his work.

Since my involvement in that group was about 20 years ago, I'd say it made a definite impact upon me.  I no longer journal my dreams...though I have mentioned some of the more potent ones to my best friend.  We understand each other pretty well.

So may your dreams be of most use to you, yourself.  And may you have total rest and relaxation from the hurly burly world we live in these days.  May the dark offer you comfort and nurture.

Blessed Be.

Happy Winter Solstice

We pagan oriented folks, who follow the seasons of the earth as it changes, celebrate some old holidays. The Winter Solstice is a great one.

As the longest night of the year reminds us to be comfortable inside, to be in tune with our own inner beings, I love to think about my dreams. I used to keep a dream journal. No longer. But it's fun to wake up in the morning and remember them.

My friends talk about going "inside ourselves." Listening to what is real, what has been hiding in the dark perhaps.  I've been so busy, have I forgotten to find what is most important to me?

It's certainly not politics, though they will influence my life.  It's not the numbers that affect my life one way or another.  It's not the disagreements I may have with friends or family.  It's not what I wear, eat or drive down the highway.  These are the things of daylight.

At night, when it's me myself and I...then I need to tune into myself.  I used to say my Elf. It's just like that.  An elfish part of me, a child inside, or perhaps the grandmother from my ancestors is talking to me.  Who knows? I just need to pay attention to her now.  Why not, it's the dark that gives me this opportunity.

Quote for today:

To live content with small means; to seek elegance rather than luxury, and refinement rather than fashion....In a word, to let the spiritual, unbidden and unconscious, grow up through the common. This is to be my symphony.

Babies in my dreams

Brand new babies. Well one anyway, in my dream this morning.

Can it have anything to do with the bird that seems to always wake up around 4 am and trill constantly, like a crying baby?

I was so adept at caring for this new life, in my dream. I cuddled, cleaned, fed, swaddled, burped, and knew just the right things to do for the tiny creature, a complete human being so new to this world.
I was really good at it, I remembered the feeling when I woke up.  It's been many (ahem) years since I had my own newborns.
 Original file ‎ (3,008 × 2,000 pixels, file size: 743 KB, MIME type ...

Once awake and remembering the feelings from the dream...I started thinking "perhaps I could get a job or volunteer to help with newborn babies as a relief for their parents."

There are lots of sleepy new parents out there who wouldn't mind giving up that 2 am feeding to someone else...though of course I'm happy to hand the newbie over to the nursing mom after the diaper has been changed.

But wait, there's a reason I don't care for little babes, or even big ones. The menacing hacking sound of my cough from asthma and bronchiectasis. I forget it 'cause I carry it around in my back pocket, always coming out at inconvenient moments, and it only surprises new people when it comes out with its suddenness and loud bark.

Its chronic bronchiectasis. See Wikipedia HERE. It doesn't mean I have anything catching, and the people who know me have gotten used to it by now. But when I walked through a crowd last weekend and coughed (while covering my mouth of course) I was looked at askance by a man who had had his back to me, who turned and looked "was I going to give him some germ or another? Why wasn't I in a hospital at least?"  That look.

So I can dream, anyway. And smile at the tenderness of newborns. Let's see, if ever my grandchildren who are adults partner up with someone, there might be a baby born into my family again...maybe.

I'm adding my dream to Sepia Saturday this week.

Dreaming away...

My dream this morning, as I struggled to wake up...or maybe stay asleep.

... my favorite animal they are horses i just love horses i hope one day i
I've  got 2 horses in the spare bedroom, in a 2 bedroom apartment on the second floor.

My "mother" a grandmotherly type person, has brought them inside, and my "grandson" of about 10 is hauling them a bucket of water.  I think I was really asleep when the horses arrived.

Then the mother has to go out (perhaps the police take her?)

And then I have to figure out how to feed the horses, and yes, shovel the manure so the carpet is clean!

Bring some bales of hay up the stairs.

But need to do it at night so the neighbors don't see, of course. Will they have enough to eat if I wait to bring hay in the night? (I must think they eat the hay.) I think they better behave until then, or what else could possibly happen!

Nothing stressful about living on a second floor with a couple of horses!  Just my everyday sort of dream!

That which we most know and love.

Dream:
two episodes,
first
some conference center, and two other participants and I know the real scoop.  There are aliens among us.  So we join hands, remember by reminding each other to do that which we most know and love...and decide to just fly over the heads of everyone else.  I kind of wake up, but say I must remember that I can fly.  Of course.  And I must remember what I most know and love.  I say to the multitude below that "The promise is fullfilled, the One has come so now is the time to begin to live the Way we all know and love."

It's a bit ambiguous, I'll admit.  But it was enough for my multitude at the conference.  And did I hear what the other two flying "angels or archangels?" said also?  Not a clue.
Angelic Council, Orthodox icon of the seven archangels, left to right: Jegudiel, Gabriel, Selaphiel, Michael, Uriel, Raphael, Barachiel. Beneath the mandorla of Christ-Immanuel (God is with us) are representations of Cherubim (blue) and Seraphim (red).

second,
I am visiting the home where my oldest two boys lived with their dad and step mom.  One of them is having some trouble, so I go talk with him privately.  I get the evil eye from step mom (who reminds me of someone else).  Poor little boy is under covers, and finally comes out like an animal who's wounded...and I hug and pet him with just the same gentle loving I'd give any person or animal.  He is scared.  I don't know of what, but I wrap him tight in a hug, as well as blankets.  His face has become covered with fur, which is almost a beard, bright yellow, just to remind me it's a dream.  I hold him till he falls asleep in my arms.  Just the way he does in real life with one of his children now that he's an adult himself.  But I know we all carry the inner frightened little child within us, and need to give that same comfort to each other.
The Annunciation, by Henry Ossawa Tanner

So I asked for some emotional support for myself when I woke up.

Setting up a support system for ourselves has become important to do.  Don't just take it for granted, and end up with one best friend who somehow can't fullfill the needs of a best friend.

It used to be a family, but that's changed with our mobile families often.

I have recently found how many people are willing to come to the aid of someone who needs help.
I am truly grateful to each and everyone of them.
Incidentally, I may have been brought up conservative Christian, but I no longer can say that I believe in the stories/myths of the Judeo/Christian theology.  I don't intend to offend anyone...after all dreams can be about anything.

Outdoor sales time-Dreaming time

Anyone who doesn't do outdoor sales of their pottery these days must have a Kooshie job indoors, and just go on hikes in the woods for recreation.  Or they just don't want to be part of a fun adventure of setting up a tent and then either freezing, basking, baking or dripping with whatever momma nature sends along for weather.

I'm being facetious of course. Usually we have a delightful morning each Saturday.
Selling with low overhead has been a blessing for my old age adventure with pottery.  Speaking of old age...

I'm an optimist, so believe I'll never die.  It's all in my mind, right?
And then there's the maxim which I live by, Dream Big!

If you're going to dream about things, why just go halfway?  Why do a middling daydream when you can dream up a fantasy which others will envy?

Dream like a kid - With .PSD by TranceParadox

So I bring a Tupperware tub of pottery to a Tailgate market each Saturday. The 2 of us who are hostesses (of the 5 MudBuddies) for that week wrestle the tent up, the 3 tables, the green table clothes, and empty each of the 5 tubs to display each other's pottery.  Our display is simple, but each individual has unique tricks.

And as I sit there visiting with old friends and new, I'm aware of how we all are walking this green earth with our own dreams.

I imagine lots of things about the people buzzing by to get their fresh greens, peaches, chocolate, pots, jewelry and above everything else, gorgeous summer flowers.  One day I imagined I could read their minds...and thought up things that Dickens might enjoy...or perhaps Hemingway.  Another time I decided everyone could read each other's minds. (I never abuse this fantasy by saying, buy buy buy...well almost never.)

That's when it's slow.  But lately there have been several people looking at our 5 potter's work almost continuously.  I'm so grateful for that.  And I enjoy working with the other 4 Mud Buddies.  What a great group of creative people we are.

Today's Quote:
John Lennon, Imagine

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people living life in peace

You may say I'm a dreamer,
but I'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people sharing all the world

You may say I'm a dreamer,
but I'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll join us
And the world will live as one

When was the last time you reached one of your dreams?
