Forgetting to take photos

I must be sick. How could I have gone through beautiful countryside, visited friendly people at the Art Center in Shelby NC, shared dinner with good friends...and NOT take a single photo!

We drove down (from mountains everything is down, but so is driving in a southerly direction) to Shelby, leaving the sleet and rain of Black Mountain.

We packed up the remaining pottery which hadn't sold, and looked at a list of what had, then drove back to Marion. That's where the three of us met another potter friend for Mexican food dinner.

And I just enjoyed the whole thing. I used Siri a few times to find out where I'd sent us to the wrong place with my faulty memory. I'm glad my phone was a backup, so we didn't continue in the directions that would have made us miss some of the fun we had.

Pshaw! That's where that term is good. I messed up with no photos. So I'm going to find some older photos here to share.

Last year's show in Shelby, inside the Cleveland County Arts Council, aka the Old Post Office building.

My cousin Violet, and yours truly. We found out I'd made a mistake on my genealogy, so we're not really cousins. But I'd sure adopt her if we could. She told us a lot about the Art Center, where she works...I was interested in the Old Post Office building, where they are situated.

Sold this little sculpture. That makes me happy.

Only the green mugs, one plate, and the weird vase on top shelf sold from this end of the display...I thought the tan and celadon bowls would certainly catch someone's eye. I think they are perfect serving dishes. Just goes to show what I know!

I'm glad to have these photos to remember what was gone when I packed up the remaining ones. Only one dragon was left on the top shelf, and a lot of the white with red flowers had sold. But the blue on white, not a thing! So that's all I'll say about my efforts to know my market. Nah.

More of the Treasures of the Earth show

While some Shelby NC residents will be coming to the opening reception at the Cleveland County Arts Council next Thursday, we dropped our pottery off, set up our displays, and came home last Thurs. during the constant rain storm.

Getting to an Art Show...

Gaia is the name I use for the goddess of mother nature.
She's in charge of trees, rivers, plants, weather and earthquakes. (Some of this has been posted today over on "When I Was 69) But here are the pictures of some of the pottery.

So when us piddly people plan an event, and Gaia has other ideas, guess who wins! The opening of the show has been postponed till next Thurs. evening. Of course the pots are already for sale.

Yes, this was also part of Vicki Gill's display...she had 3 tables but they were smallish. And her pieces were kind of big!

Then there were really big pots by Doug Knotts.

This display lost power by having the beautiful fabric. It is a good lesson that plain table coverings do bring out the pottery itself.

Mandala Puzzle to go to the show

I've hemmed and hawed (whatever that means) and finally decided to take the Mandala Puzzle down to the pottery show in Shelby NC Thursday.

It's kind of my favorite of the two which I made, but it probably is more sturdy with a board back than the other one with just a cardboard backing. When it's going to be displayed, and probably handled some for a month, I think that was a deciding factor.  

It, and 3 other tubs of my pottery are going to the Cleveland County Arts Council for Treasures of the Earth.  

However, this is more what our weather will be like driving down to Shelby. Rain and flooding are expected all in the areas we'll be driving...through these mountains. So the hour plus 15 minutes may take a bit longer.  I don't mind that at all. And I'm ever so grateful that Tim, my good buddy who comes through in a pinch, will be doing the driving. He has a van which can hold all our set-up stuff and tubs of potter, as well as myself and friend potter, Cathy.

The unloading and bringing things inside will be wet going, if the weather man is correct.  Oh well, I'll try to remember some towels in my handy dandy everything to take bag. Which I haven't packed yet. Now where is that white table cloth that I always put on the table?

Treasures of the Earth

What a great title for a pottery show.  And Feb-March is such a good time for an indoor smallish show.  I was delighted to drive a bit over an hour down to Shelby to put up my pottery for hopefully someone in a different area to take something home.  My friend Cathy also went and is showing some of her work. It is great to have someone to drive with.

Violet, my cousin (? we're not, maybe because of some shifts in my ancestry) was there as Arts Council staff.  It is such a welcoming community.

Ron Philbeck has been doing very well this year with his poured multiple glaze colors.  He's been invited to some juried shows I know, but too far away for me to visit.  I think the mug on the far right second shelf will come home with me at the end of the show.

I get a kick out of Brian Dukes' work, full of fantasy and fun.  (He's Violet's husband.) These are all painted with acrylics, and yet they don't look that painterly! He's got a good touch with a brush as his first medium was painting.

I enjoyed Pam Bailey's carved fish designs, which are almost invisible until you look closely.

The way this show works, people pay for an item they want to buy, then leave it there with a "sold" sticker on it until the end of the exhibit in March.  I love that everyone who visits can see everything, rather than some half empty shelves during the whole exhibit period.  So Cathy and I will drive back down to Shelby in March and pack up everything (hopefully not much) that we didn't sell.

This is the main room, with all 4 walls covered with 6 foot displays by different potters, and refreshments will be on the center tables by 5:30 when the reception begins.  I love how this former post office building has been renovated for an art center.

This alcove doesn't have many potter displays, which is ok with me, since the beer and wine table is here.  I don't mind being in that corner next to the stairs and the restroom.  I figure a lot of folks might need to pass by my display whether they plan to or not.

There are the front doors and the entry area with a few benches which were very welcome about halfway into the evening.

I enjoyed this evening, but I was one very tired cookie by the time I put my feet between the sheets.  I had to turn the air conditioner on because the sun had been warming my bedroom all day (it was in the 70s, no fooling!) Today the temperature has dropped since I woke, from maybe 52 down to

41 now at 4 pm.
