Monarch fueling up

Just before leaving my former home for the last time, I saw this wonderful visitor against the garage of my neighbors behind me.  What a wonderful sight as a farewell gift.

I only have seen 2 this year, but what with everything happening in my life, I haven't really been sitting around watching for them.  So it's been such a pleasure to catch a glimpse of survivors as I pass by.  I imagine the Poke-berry bush had just the right nectar for this little one as she readies herself for her big migration to Mexico.

Incidentally, do you know how to tell the sex of a Monarch?  The males have 2 little bars or spots on their lower wings on the little lines of black close to their bodies...let me find a picture because it will make it much clearer.

The male Monarch Butterfly may be easily distinguished from the female by noting the two highly visable black spots on the insect's hind wings and the thinner black webbing within the wings. The female's webbing is thicker and she has no identifying wing spot as the male does.

Male

Female

  2. I haven't seen any monarchs here; I plan to plant host plants for them next spring. I do have a beautyberry plant which is just now recovering from the winter before last.

  3. Thank you for that info about male and female monarchs! I didn't know that. I love learning things about Nature. It makes enjoying Nature even better.
