A bicycle or what?

A vintage bicycle club.

And on a completely different topic, this photo was posted on FBk. (I hope it's not fake.) I loved seeing that Queen Elizabeth has a sense of humor, as her husband, Prince Phillip dressed as one of the guards but Elizabeth knew who he was. And he's not smiling, of course, being a guard!

I share this with Sepia Saturday this week.

I'm not quite sure what the man looking at his pocket watch might have to do with the large man on the bicycle...and apparently the one kneeling is helping him keep his balance.

I hope more people will be sharing on Sepia Saturday. It's been such fun getting to know the various people who've contributed from all over the world.

  1. Love the bicycle club photo. I have read that the bicycle became a liberating mode of transportation for women, who could cycle off when and where they wanted once bikes were mass produced. This photo seems to illustrate that new freedom and new, healthy form of recreation bicycles represented for both women and men.

  3. Love both photos. I'm a great fan of Victorian-era pictures; and the photo of Prince Phillip & Queen Elizabeth is cute. I love her smile. It looks like she's getting a real kick out of the whole thing! And I've heard she does, indeed, have quite a sense of humor.

  4. I love the different expressions and poses in the bicycle club photo. And the queen's grin - priceless!

  5. I imagine bikes were quite a sensation when they first became popular. Interesting post.

  6. I wonder when the first bicycles came to Western North Carolina? I've read that early paved road improvements came about because of bicycle clubs. And looking closely at our theme image I think the man with the watch is checking to see how long before the bicycle frame breaks under the fat man's weight

  7. You have given us an engaging post with just two photographs which just shows the power of good images. Love the vintage cycle club photo, and as Molly said, cyckes gave women an escape from the domestic scene and a sense of adventure - though I was struck by the size of those leg o mutton sleeves!
