Multi-tasking no more

Drat and dang it all.
That's little old lady talk for the f-word and much heavier d-words.  And yes I count myself as little, no matter what the scale says!

I can no longer do more than one thing at a time.

Put toast in the toaster, start the coffee, remembering filter and grounds and water, watch the toast because it tends to either be blah and white or burned, start the laptop, feed the fish, no wait, let's take some of the food out of the big container and put it in the little one, oh my, toast smells burning, run into the kitchen!

Yep, whenever anything is on the stove (or in the darling toaster oven which I use several times a day)...I have a new rule.  Stand there and wait.  DO NOT do anything else! I used to put the iron skillet on a burner while finishing doing the dishes. The burner used to be on.  Let me tell you how clean a smoking skillet can be after 10 minutes when I went in the other room! That's now a no-no also.

So tired of that blasted smoke detector letting all my neighbors know I've done it again!  And I really haven't gotten to the worst stage yet.  We have an automatic can over the stove up under the hood, which will dump chemicals out if there's a grease fire.  Whew, so glad that hasn't happened!

  1. I am exactly the same, realizing I shouldn't EVER start the stovetop, etc, with something and wander off figuring I am coming right back!

    1. I don't know if you ever get to read these replies...but I do appreciate that you comment almost daily. I know you do a lot of cooking, waaay more than I do. Glad to hear we're in a similar boat about leaving things cooking.

  2. Yes, yes, yes!

Or is it no, no, no?

NO multi-tasking for little olden ladies!!! (me too! I am "little," be cause of my height and not what the scales say!!!! >,-))

Actually, no one can do multi-tasking, although a whole lot of younger folks, think they can. But ding-dang-it, they can't. Our minds move from one thing to another. And just because that "bright young thing" thinks she is doing 6-things-at-once... She is actually doing 6 things, not very well, 'cause her mind is flipping from one to the other to the other. And thus, not doing a good job, on any of those tasks.

    1. Luna, you hit the nail on the proverbial head. It's what our minds think we can do...whether we're young or old. Mental energy is much faster than physical energy. At least that's my humble opinion!

  3. Yep. And somehow these little things are so much more a problem when we are older. Even if the same things happened when we were young. My big problem is boiling eggs. I can't stand the wait so...well you know, don't you?

    1. Ha ha, I happen to be a strange nut who doesn't like hard boiled eggs. The worst things I make that I have to wait to cook are usually things I bake...and I do use the timer for them. Just boiling water is such a strain though!

  4. For some reason I have left the burner on on my new cook top too many times to count! I keep blaming it on the knob positioning of this new appliance and not a memory lapse, lol.

    1. Oh those cook tops are sneaky, aren't they? They look nice and smooth, and bingo something is burning when you put it on a hot place! Just my cutting board would go in no time!

  5. My saviour is the timer. I use the timer for everything in the kitchen... but alas, sometimes forget to take the timer with me as I go from room to room.

    1. I only use the timer to bake things...but that's because I don't know how long toast actually takes to get golden before it gets burned on the edges. Fortunately I can microwave without problems. So far.
