Glorious rain and sunshine!

Since it's been raining in the evenings (mainly) I haven't been going to the raised-bed garden daily as I was the beginning of the month.  So what to my surprised eyes did I see last night when I went to put some strings up for the beans to climb!

That second bed has my huge plants going like crazy.  They are twice the size the were a week ago!

From the right front you can see a basil plant which is ready for lots of harvesting. (Pesto in the making, I just wash the leaves then freeze them) Then huge sunflowers, and even some smaller ones from the "wildflower packet".  The tomato plants are also falling over, and finally on the left end are the beans, about 6 inches tall.  This is what it looked like before I started running some strings from the bamboo posts.

Beans have something eating the leaves on a few plants.

Two tomato plants also have something eating on them, and some blossoms.  The one little green tomato already had some eggs laid in cracked skin, so it was picked off.

The two tomato plants were much happier after being propped up a bit by the string.  I know wire cages would be better, but this is what I already have.

You can see the bugs eating the sunflower leaves too.  It's really crowded I know...

I'm going to spray everything with a bit of garlic water tomorrow and hope that will deter some of my little insect friends.  But after all, I wanted some butterflies, and they do start out as caterpillars!  We need to share the bounty!

Today's quote:

People say, "What is the sense of our small effort?" They cannot see that we must lay one brick at a time, take one step at a time. Dorothy Day

  1. Love all the greenery; it always amazes that so much can be grown in small spaces.
A friend used to put down a bed of straw and let her tomatoes sprawl on the ground. She thought it made for healthier plants; I'm not so sure!

  2. Your garden looks great! It's amazing how things take off with the rain. It seems no amount of hand watering can do what a good rainfall can.
