San Jacinto Inn

I've mentioned San Jacinto, Texas, before on a blog (HERE)
But when going through my mother's and my old postcards, I found this one.
It's not as old as hers are, but the Inn was actually opened in the year she was born.

Since last week we (Texans all over the world) celebrated the date of the Battle of San Jacinto, in which Sam Houston beat the Mexican general, Santa Anna, and thus Texas won independence from Mexico...I chose to offer this as my thanks to those Texans.  That battle led to the US eventually having much of the territory of other states as well.

My last visit to the San Jacinto Inn was probably in 1978, and that's likely the time I purchased this card.  Or maybe not.  It's got an address with a zip code, and a phone number with an area code, so I'm sure it wasn't published much earlier than that.

I submit this to Sepia Saturday a bit late, and quite a bit off topic. All my United Kingdom friends will have something to celebrate their Queen's 90th probably.

  1. That's quite the dining room pictured on the postcard. And by the way, I really like the way you did that cup in the heading with the tree roots spreading down and around onto the bottom of the cup. Very clever. I often admire your work.

    1. Thanks Gail! I remember being so little my feet didn't touch the floor from my chair the first time I ate there!

    1. I love history, especially through historical fiction books...but I don't know if this Inn has ever been featured in any. A challenge to find it, or write it, I guess!

  4. I read that the biscuits were exceptional and you can find the recipe on line on several sites. Here's one:

    1. Poor Houston and SE Texas. Hope they are drying out. When I lived there I remember driving through flooded areas on a raised road which was covered with snakes! They had nowhere else to go to survive. Scared the be-jeesus out of me!

  6. What you call biscuits are what we Australians, New Zealanders and English call scones. We bought some fruit scones at a farm shop yesterday before lunching at a 16th century Inn in Surrey, just outside London.

    1. Thanks Jo...we have scones sometimes, usually with tea. Here they are much more buttery than a biscuit...and biscuits need butter smeared on them after they are split, then jam. They don't come with any fruit inside them.
