Workshop with Cathy and oh, Jason too!

My friend Cathy and I went out to Haywood Craft Program for a clay workshop being given by Jason Burnett, from Arrowmont.
The new crafts program at Haywood Community College is wonderful, as are the buildings.

One of Cathy's ceramic pieces is shown by a photo in the hallway still.

She graduated there several years ago.  I'm the proud owner of several of her pieces.

Jason was an excellent speaker, demonstrated how to silk screen patterns in underglaze so they could be applied to pottery.

My biggest surprise was seeing my son, Tai Rogers standing in the middle of the back wearing a red jacket...on Jason's slides.

Pretty sure the tall guy with beard over on right at the back is Tai.

Tai met Jason several years ago, probably at Penland.  Jason gave me a hug when he found out I was Tai's mom, and they both said they are good friends.

Small world the potting community is.

Thought from a quote:

Take care of yourself — you never know when the world will need you.

  2. I was going to drive over for that workshop but then I thought two hours one way and then two hours the other way and sitting all that time would have been too much for my knee that still isn't right

    1. Oh my Linda, and they didn't do introductions between students, so I wouldn't have even known you were in the same room if you'd come too. We had to leave early so Cathy could fire a bisque kiln...but it included a pot luck lunch, which is probably when I would have come over squinting to you and wondering why you look familiar!

  3. I have visited almost all the potters in our area and I must say, they are all such a friendly sort. No wonder you all get along so well.

    1. You said it...and share our techniques among ourselves too. The only profession where I have seldom seen anyone refuse to share something even with competitors

  4. Barbara -- What a beautiful setting to attend a clay workshop. Sounds like clay potters have a wonderful culture of their own. I believe socialization of like minds is a great attribute for any type of interest. -- barbara

    1. Yes, Barbara...there are pot lucks and gatherings of potters at the drop of a hat (figuratively of course) and potters do a lot of their work in solitude, so getting together is special to them. In our community studio we still are asking each other "how'd you do that?"

    1. I am so glad to finally be part of the pottery world, at least a little bit. I don't know many of the people who are really serious potters, but I'm glad to see their work at shows whenever I can, as well as read blogs from the folks that have time to do both, pot and blog!

    1. It was even more surprising since I had just left visiting my son for the first time in 2 years...just 3 days before the workshop!

    1. And you're going to be at Arrowmont yourself, I understand! Whoopee, more in a chain of knots we're weaving ourselves!
