Ranting about Mother's Day

Next Sunday, in the US at least, families celebrate Mother's Day.

So I'd like to invite my three sons, their wives/partners and six grandchildren, to join me for a picnic.  Or perhaps have some home cooked pot roast and flakey rolls and hot fudge sundaes at my house.  I do have enough chairs, though I might borrow a card table.

Mother's Day...it's another one of those holidays where Norman Rockwellian gatherings are NEVER the actuality of our lives.

But we do gather, as we can, and share what and who we are.  Our emotions are based upon the past, the present and the hopes for the future...which means doing some work for a lot of us.

So I offer my advice from my advanced age, and having been a mother for over 50 years.

If you are the mother, go buy yourself whatever will please you.  You've been thinking of it for yourself but not allowing its purchase.

If you are the daughter, you know already what your mother wants because she's told you at least a few times, and you will buy it for her, and probably one for yourself too.

If you are the son, ask your mother, because you are probably clueless, but she will gladly tell you what she wants, which will be a simple loving gesture and not require you to do more shopping than you can endure.  But do send that card that you picked up the other day.

If you are a business, blast all these poor lucky people to make them show their love with your products!

Quote for the day:

"You use a glass mirror to see your face; you use works of art to see your soul.” George Bernard Shaw
