Eggshell over Little Loafers

A friend liked the glaze which she had on a very large bowl, so I've tried to do the same on these smaller bowls for her.

Little Loafers is a nice whitish cone six clay...from Highwater Clays in Asheville.

Eggshell is one of the studio glazes at the Black Mountain Center for the Arts clay studio.  And the turquoise on the rim is another glaze called Mexico, which is in very short supply these days.  Shortage of Mexico glaze is directly proportional to the cost of one of the chemicals which make up this color, namely tin.

  1. What pretty little bowls!
As for tin, have you ever done tests subbing zircopax (or it's latest incarnation) for some or all of the tin? I've had very good luck with this, but remember I work in low fire. We had good results with zircopax at my old co-op where we fired from ^5 - ^10. It's worth experimenting as the price of tin seems to be stratospheric!

    1. I'll ask Charles Freeland to check out doing some swapping. He's more knowlegable than me on chemical mixes.

    1. Hey, Mexico and Eggshell sound funny to you? How about Plum? Nutmeg? They have way too much food in glaze names I think. Raspberry.

  3. I just picked up a bag of little loafers! The first 25#'s throws like a dream not I need to glaze and fire before I figure out what to do with the other 25# :) Great post!

    1. Oh keep letting me know how it goes for your use! I love it...and the results I get firing to cone 6 are pretty reliable too.
